Skills For Life .......We Can Help!!!

Skills For Life .....

"to brush up on skills I learnt at school; It's easy to lose things you learnt at school, if you don't use it you lose it" "so I can join in with what is happening around me; now I don't feel I'm missing out by not understanding"

Skills For Work .....

"so I could improve my chances at work, it will help me get a better job" "I got my first qualification" "it helped me get the job I wanted"

Skills For You .....

"I wanted to learn something new"
"now I can keep up with my children and help them with their homework"
"I feel more confident"
"I just wanted to learn some thing for myself"

Skills For Life or Basic Skills

"I hated Maths at school, so I've never been happy doing calculations".
"I always struggle with spelling; it worries me when I fill in job application forms".
"Does the apostrophe go before the s or after it?"
"I'd like to apply for that job, but I'm no good at figure work".
Many people, (1 in 5 adults) can relate to similar concerns. People get by, but often lack confidence in maths or literacy. This can be a barrier to them applying for a better job and improving their lives. A good worker, with years of experience, may refuse to apply for a higher paid position because of the fear of dealing with all the paperwork.

In the B48s we provide:

An Initial Assessment: A free session on the computer, approximately 40 minutes. You go through a series of questions covering maths and literacy. At the end there will be a printable screen showing what levels you are working at.

Word Skills Check: If you want to improve your literacy skills, this free, 3 hour course will "diagnose" the areas you need to work on and point to a relevant skills for life course to enrol on, A Way With Words or Spelling It Out for example.

Number Skills Check: If you want to improve your numeracy skills, this free, 3 hour course will "diagnose" the areas you need to work on and point to a relevant skills for life course to enrol on, Numbers Direct or Cash Crescent for example.

There are many courses available and they are all free. They are computer based and designed to give an engaging environment to practice and improve your word or number skills. As with all our Computer Based Courses, you can repeat topics, sections or the whole course as often as you like until you feel confident. You also work at your pace so you can take your time with no pressure.
After completing the course you can work through Word Skills Check or Number Skills Check again to see the amount of improvement. It may point to a higher level course now and if you wish you can move on to enrol on that. It may indicate you are working at Level 2 and you may want something to show this level of skills.

Prepare For Testing: A free course that gives you practice in taking an exam in Literacy and Numeracy. You can repeat it as often as you like until you are confident to take the exam below.

City & Guilds Adult Literacy and Numeracy Certificate: This free examination is computer based and will provide you with evidence of your skills for yourself and your future employers.
